P004 → Archaeologies from a Submerged Future [workshop] (2023)
The workshop was designed for middle school students aged 10 to 13 and was proposed within ‘Concittadini’, an educational program by Emilia-Romagna region (IT) to raise environmental knowledge. The project examines future scenarios in Ravenna, addressing environmental changes due to rising sea levels, salt wedge intrusion, and subsidence. Students created 4D paper spaces through a DIY zine-making process, layering images and narratives to reflect on the city’s evolving relationship with the sea and wetlands. Each scanning and printing cycle added depth to the images, creating an archaeological record of ideas. The workshop occurred in February 2023, just before devastating floods transformed Ravenna, leaving many residents homeless and highlighting the urgency of climate change discussions. The urban waterscapes envisioned by students became a reality, emphasizing the impact of land use and climate change on coastal areas. Their work underscored the need for community awareness and action regarding these critical environmental issues.
The workshop was held for 120 students from the school Istituto Comprensivo Darsena.
